page turning mystery that keeps your thinking "Who-did-it". Great story!
This is fair to middlin' Carolyn Wells. Readable, well-written, with romance and mystery as played out in the teens of the 20th century. As is usually the case with Wells we have the wealthy family, a beloved niece, her uncle who has been a father to her, more than one suitor, and murder. Once there is murder, there is the usual collection of potential murderers, the damsel in distress and two eager suitors (one only a possible), the poor, rough cut but bright teen-ager, the police, the lawyers and, finally, Fleming Stone. There is a Will with a strange condition set for the niece if she is to collect what she is due to inherit. There are red herrings, evidence that disappears, and the tough teen-ager who so impresses Stone that he is given a permanent place at his side.
If you have accepted Stone into your roster of detectives, you will want to read this one. If you are just beginning your acquaintanceship, this is a pretty good place to start. Understand that Wells was prolific and she did not have the time to tarry too long with a book. (Note my copy shows the publication date as 1916 not 1923.)
