The author, Audie W. Starkey was inspired by his daughter, Mandy Starkey's determination and strength while fighting cancer at 11 years old. Mandy was a St. Jude patient for 10 years, and he kept a daily journal on her life before and while she was a St. Jude patient. While writing this book it evolved into being more than solely about Mandy. Audie felt obligated to write about his father and his father's military career. He also wanted to include his very influential high school coach who is still to this day a very special friend in Audie's life. He feels very blessed and lucky that God gave him 3 heroes to shape him into the person he is today, and he felt a huge need to share their journeys.

My Three Heroes is a true, and heavy on your heart story. Three people have impacted Audie Starkey's existence, his daughter who overcame cancer, his father who had a decorated military career, and his high school football coach in 1967.The majority of this book is Starkey's trials of experiencing the journey with his daughter of overcoming her cancer, and watching her grow and excel as a young women, then lose her tragically, but not from cancer. Starkey's questioning of God's plan, and journaling throughout the process of these experiences is heart wrenching, all the while God is revealing to Starkey his love and to keep going. This is a good read, with Audie's southern accent coming through his writings. The subject matter of this book is thick, very thick, but a story that has to be told, and needs to be known.

3 Heroes,,,, his daughter, his father, his coach.
You live though the turmoil of a young daughter's fight with cancer the emotional toll it takes on a family and especially on this father. The triumph of "beating cancer" and the loss of the same daughter to a tragic accident.
You see the admiration and love for a Army Career father, even though it was hard moving from school to school.
The admiration that comes thru this book for his football coach in Gardner, Kansas should be an inspiration to all coaches!!
