English teacher Theodora "Teddy" Thurber is shocked to find out that a former student of hers--a bright and beautiful young woman named Jessica Halliday--has been murdered.
Soon afterward, Teddy discovers some cryptic messages that Jessica left for her, and she begins to try to follow the trail in order to find the truth about her former student's death. In the process she must delve into the literature that Jessica loved best, since it is from these literary masterpieces that Jessica has derived her clues.
Helping Teddy is the new history and psychology teacher, who seems fascinated by Teddy, despite her conviction that she leads a dull life. As her search for Jessica intensifies, she must also deal with the unwelcome advances of an old boyfriend, complicating her life even further.
Teddy's persistence puts her and the ones she loves in danger; but she can do no less than try to avenge the murder of a promising young woman whose future success had been assured.
At her side throughout this mystery is her faithful beagle, P.G.

I won't do a summary of the story because other reviews have already covered that. But I can tell you why I liked this book. It was well written and kept my interest through several days of reading. I had to shut off my Kindle one night because it was 2 a.m. and my personal rule is to not stay up past that time. The story was good enough that I would have kept on reading for quite awhile. Then life got busy and I couldn't get back to reading for a couple of days and the story was gnawing at the back of my brain and calling me to read some more. For me, that is a sign of a good book--sometimes when I have to lay a book down for awhile it isn't worth the effort to try to get back into the story, but this one was.You can tell the author is an English teacher herself because the words are used correctly, the book has been well edited, the logical thinking of the characters is well established, and the descriptions of students and teachers seems very authentic. I was very pleased that the use of quotations at the beginning of chapters actually related to the story being told. (I find it really annoying when an author uses introductory quotes for no apparent reason--why bother? Are they just trying to look intelligent?)
There weren't any silly heroines doing stupid things that you know (and they should know) will get them killed, no one taking overblown guilt trips for someone else's stupid behavior. Very little foul language, no embarrassing overt sex scenes, but lots of romance and enough danger to keep things interesting.
And best of all, there were enough plot twists I didn't figure out who the killer was ahead of time. I hope to read more of this author's books and that they are as good as this one.

The Ghosts of Lovely Women The Teddy Thurber Mysteries Book 1 edition by Julia Buckley Romance eBooks Reviews
Is it possible for teachers to influence basic beliefs of their students? The obvious answer is - yes. When an excellent English teacher like Theodora (Teddy) Thurber introduces Henrik Isben's play 'A Doll's House' to a brilliant, but impressionable young student, Jessica Halliday, the results take a bizarre and dangerous turn. Nora Helmer, the main character in the play, is caught up in a typical 19th Century marriage where her husband views her as a second class citizen. Jessica takes this perceived abuse to heart and dedicates herself to being the instrument of 'Nora's Revenge'. When Jessica is found strangled to death in her car a channel of events spiral into a tense and dramatic mystery. What clever idea was revealed on Jessica's website? Would Jessica's cryptic clues lead Teddy and the police to the killer? And, was the most crushing clue found in the home of Derek Jonas, a trusted friend of Teddy?
Ghosts of Lovely Women, by Julia Buckley, is a book of merit, not only for its entertainment value but for its thought-provoking theme. It strikes a point that young people really do care. That they can be independent thinkers and solve complicated riddles of adult life. The light romance that intertwines this book is wonderfully created. Teddy's beagle dog, P.G., adds touches of home-like humor, and, if you are a reader like me, the many references to great literature, from Shakespeare to Dostoyevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' is an added welcome bonus!
The slowly developing plot in this novel was one of things I liked most about it because I had time to evaluate the clues and absorb what was happening. Whilst I thoroughly enjoy fast-paced mysteries, sometimes I miss vital bits because of the "helter-skelter" style of writing!
Teddy is a delightful character - I hope the author is writing another mystery for her - with an academic and inquiring mind. Her growing attraction and deepening feelings for Derek are well presented and believable, and her penchant for passing on information to the police is a refreshing change from the myriad heroines who keep what they know to themselves, make the police look stupid and then get into peril because of their, "I can do it all myself" mantra.
The use of classical literature to drop hints at the beginning of each chapter is an interesting move, and not having read A Doll's House, I am now inspired to do so! Excerpts from The Tempest et al, are also used to illustrate the victim's intelligence - which ultimately becomes her downfall.
All in all, I really enjoyed this novel, and would like to read more of this heroine's exploits.
It's 151am. I just finished reading The Ghosts of Lovely Women, in one go. It's been on my kindle app for quite awhile and I've been very busy. Not reading as much as I used to. But my kindle app crashed last night and I lost all my sample chapters. That doesn't sound like a very good beginning. But let me explain. I was going through all the whole books now visible on the app, and trying to find one that held my interest.
I'd started this book once before and the first few pages hadn't grabbed me. And the cover was somewhat offputting. To be honest, it looked amateurish. But I gave it another try, not starting at the beginning, but at the last read/saved page.
And suddenly it clicked.
The characters were so real, the relationships were so real, any of the things they spoke of that I had any knowledge of were, in my experience, correct.
And so I read it to the finish, not knowing or able to guess whodunnit.
This book, in my opinion, was not only well written, it was the most beautiful and perfect book I have ever read.
Those are the words that came to mind for me. Beautiful, and perfect.
I could have simply worded the review; beautiful, and perfect. 5 stars. But I felt it deserved a little more.
Well done.
